Sony Distributing 'The Criterion Collection' in the U.K.

7 Mar, 2016 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment March 7 announced it will for the first time distribute The Criterion Collection outside North America — beginning April 18 in the United Kingdom.

Initial releases include It Happened One Night, Grey Gardens, Macbeth (directed by Roman Polanski), Only Angels Have Wings, Speedy and Tootsie.

“Starting with these six great titles, we are happy to be able to bring selections from Criterion to our very devoted audience in the U.K. We are thrilled to build upon our strong relationship with Sony and look forward to expanding the Criterion audience,” Jonathan Turell, CEO of The Criterion Collection, said in a statement.

Founded in 1984, The Criterion Collection has been dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements. Retail editions have included Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray and more recently streaming deals with Hulu Plus and Showtime OTT.

The Criterion Collection and SPHE last July announced a multiyear extension to their distribution agreement, which began in 2014. Under the newly extended deal, Criterion continued to distribute its properties in the home entertainment window through Sony in the domestic — and now U.K. — marketplace.

“Criterion represents the very best of classic and contemporary filmmaking and we are delighted to bring this prestigious collection to the U.K. for the first time,” Aodan Coburn, EVP of international for SPHE, said in a statement. “This partnership demonstrates SPHE’s continued commitment to growing our distribution business.”
