Sony Bows 'Goosebumps' VR Experience27 Jan, 2016 By: Stephanie Prange
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is going virtual again.
The studio Jan. 25 unveiled the free Goosebumps Virtual Reality Experience app. The app allows consumers to hop in the car and help author R.L. Stine (Jack Black) navigate the windy streets as they try to escape a ferocious, giant praying mantis.
The app can be used on a compatible iPhone or Android smartphone with a virtual reality viewing device such as Merge VR Goggles or Google Cardboard. Users without VR Goggles or Google Cardboard can also enter the “360° video mode” and experience the chase using only their mobile devices.
The Goosebumps VR app is available from the Apple App store and from Google Play.
For a limited time the Goosbumps Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD will include a special discount offer for the Merge VR Goggles. To learn more about the offer, visit www.GoosebumpsVR.com.
Earlier this month, Sony launched a free virtual reality mobile app that ties into The Walk. The Walk VR Experience App allows users to experience Philippe Petit's legendary 1974 high-wire walk between the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center. Joseph Gordon Levitt starred as the high-wire daredevil in the film, which was directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis. The Walk discs, which streeted Jan. 5, also featured a limited-time discount coupon for online purchases of Merge VR Goggles.
Meanwhile, in another Goosebumps promotion, Sony and book publisher Scholastic have teamed up to donate 20,000 books to children in underserved communities as well as those recovering from crises or natural disasters in the United States. The books, featuring a selection of "Goosebumps" books by Stine, are being donated through the Scholastic Possible Fund and will be distributed by Save the Children.
