Anchor Bay Inks Distribution Deal With Byron Allen's Entertainment Studios14 Jul, 2016 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Anchor Bay Entertainment July 14 announced a new multiyear agreement with Entertainment Studios, the media production and distribution company owned by Byron Allen.
The deal gives Anchor Bay distribution rights to Blu-ray Disc, DVD, Digital HD and transactional VOD in the United States to a projected 100 theatrically released movies over the next five years produced, acquired, owned, and/or controlled by Entertainment Studios.
“Byron Allen and his team have built an impressive media empire with a clear vision and commitment to delivering a strong slate of motion pictures appealing to wide audiences,” Bill Clark, president of Anchor Bay Entertainment, said in a statement. “ABE is committed to expanding their reach even further by offering their unique content to new audiences within the home entertainment marketplace.”
Founded in 1993, Entertainment Studios features eight HD networks, dozens of first-run syndicated TV shows, more than 5,000 hours of HD programming and a podcast network. DirecTV and AT&T recently inked TV deals with Entertainment Studios.
Interestingly, the company’s theatrical slate apparently remains a work in progress.
In January, Allen reportedly bid $20 million for the rights to The Birth of a Nation, a 2016 period drama and Sundance Film Festival winner about Nat Turner, a slave who led a rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831. The distribution rights eventually went to Fox Searchlight.
“Anchor Bay Entertainment has proved to be the best in the business with their unparalleled relationships with retailers, as well as their incredibly innovative marketing campaigns that resonate with today’s audience,” Allen said.
Anchor Bay’s corporate parent, Starz, was recently acquired by Lionsgate.
