Western Digital Bows Updated Media Player With Spotify Music App

6 Oct, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Western Digital Oct. 6 bowed an updated version of its wireless WD TV Live media player that includes the first industry app for the Spotify music service.

The Irvine, Calif.-based external storage device manufacturer’s WD TV Live player — launched in 2009 — features an upgraded user interface that delivers movies, TV shows, music and other online content from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Blockbuster On Demand and Dailymotion to the TV. The streaming media player connects to the Internet wirelessly or through an Ethernet connection, with 802.11n wireless connectivity supporting full-HD 1080p video resolution.

In a first among media players, the WD TV Live player now enables premium Spotify subscribers unlimited on-demand access to Spotify's catalog of more than 15 million songs on their home entertainment system.

“By marrying advanced features of the new wireless WD TV Live with quality content from service providers, including a first-of-its-kind service with Spotify, we are excited to deliver on that commitment,” said Jim Welsh, EVP and GM for WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups.
