US IPTV projected to hit 15 million subscribers by 2013

U.S. Internet-Protocol Television (IPTV) subscriptions will increase to around 15.5 million by 2013, compared to an estimated number of more than 5 million IPTV households in 2009, according to Strategy Analytics.
IPTV household penetration would increase to nearly 13% in 2013, up from from 5% in 2009.
The entrance of the telcos into the television arena has increased competition for traditional pay TV models, the report says. Strategy Analytics maintains that IPTV will will become an important aspect of pay television, despite reduced deployment by companies such as AT&T, which recently announced it has pushed back its goal of 30 million IPTV-enabled households to 2011 from 2010, citing the difficult economic times.
According to Ben Piper, director of the Strategy Analytics Multiplay Market Dynamics, “crucial to the ultimate failure or success of IPTV in the U.S. will be adequate customer uptake and demand.” He stresses that to date, telcos have not done a sufficient job of articulating the IPTV value proposition to the customer.
