U.K. Gets Early Digital Access to Starz's 'Power'

9 Jun, 2014 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Brits can buy individual episodes or entire season available 48 hours after initial U.S. broadcast

Consumers in the United Kingdom June 9 received early digital access to new Starz Original series “Power,” from showrunner Courtney Kemp Agboh (Emmy-nominated "The Good Wife") and executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, among others.

Electronic sellthrough (EST) purchases in the U.K. are available through Amazon Instant Video, blinkbox, Google Play, iTunes, Sony Entertainment Network and Xbox Video.

The eight-episode “Power,” which premiered June 7 on Starz in the United States, is a contemporary crime drama contrasting the New York club scene with the ruthless drug trade. It stars Omari Hardwick (Sparkle, For Colored Girls, Kick-Ass, “Being Mary Jane”); Lela Loren (Snitch, “Gang Related”); Naturi Naughton (Fame, “The Client List,” “Mad Men”), and Joseph Sikora (Jack Reacher, Safe, “Boardwalk Empire”).

Starz is cross-promoting the series, which airs on Saturdays, with Jackson’s recently released rap album, Animal Ambition, including select tracks from the TV series.

“'Power’ is a contemporary drama that will especially appeal to younger demographic audiences,” Mara Winokur, SVP, digital at Starz Digital Media, said in a statement.

Starz continues to re-jigger the conventional multichannel video program distribution strategy by offering early access to select U.S. programming in the U.K. Amazon Prime Instant Video UK in April began streaming all episodes to the first season of Starz Originals pirate series “Black Sails.”

Starz will bow its first original, unscripted series “The Chair” this fall, using multiple platforms to lure viewers and consumers.
