Starz Digital Licenses Content to Urban Movie Channel3 Jun, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Starz Digital June 3 announced it has licensed 40 hours of content to Urban Movie Channel, a subscription streaming service owned and operated by RLJ Entertainment.
“We have acquired an array of titles from Starz Digital that [are] in line with what our chairman, Bob Johnson, has envisioned for growing the UMC digital channel,” Angela Northington, SVP of urban content acquisitions, said in a statement.
Under the multiyear agreement, UMC will have access to five seasons of Starz original comedy series “Martin Lawrence Presents: First Amendment,” documentary Phunny Business: A Black Comedy, featuring comedian Dave Chappelle and the late Bernie Mac; and Lies and Illusions, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Christian Slater, and award-winning doc History of Jazz: Oxygen for the Ears, featuring jazz greats Esperanza Spalding, Thelonius Monk and Norah Jones, among others.
“Starz Digital is always seeking new opportunities to identify relationships with distributors on emerging digital platforms. This UMC agreement brings strong titles from our portfolio of urban library programming with an on-target digital outlet that is a great match for the content,” said Mara Winokur, SVP at Starz Digital.
