Taking a page from ex-wife Robin Wright, Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn has been cast in Hulu original series, “The First.” Beau Willimon, who caught lightning in a bottle creating Netflix award-winning series “House of Cards,” co-starring Wright, is creating the show, which follows the first human mission to Mars.

Though details about Penn’s role remain under wraps, this marks the actor’s first foray into television. The story focuses not only on the astronauts, but also on their families and loved ones, as well as the ground team on Earth.

“I have such deep admiration for Sean’s immense talent and extraordinary body of work,” Willimon said in a statement. “I feel very lucky to be collaborating with an artist of his caliber.”

The series will go into production this year and is slated to premiere in 2018. Hulu, which is co-owned by Disney, Fox, Comcast and Time Warner, Sept. 17 became the first SVOD service to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series with “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Penn has been nominated five times for the Academy Award as Best Actor for Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, I Am Sam and won his first Oscar in 2003 in Clint Eastwood's Mystic River and his second Oscar as Best Actor in 2009 for Gus Van Sant’s Milk.

Additionally, Penn received Best Actor awards at the Cannes (She's So Lovely) and Berlin (Dead Man Walking) Film Festivals, as well as being a two-time winner of Best Actor honors at the Venice Film Festival (Hurlyburly, 21 Grams).
