Rovi’s DivX Plus Goes Streaming

1 Sep, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

Retailers and consumer electronics companies now have the ability to stream the 1080p video codec DivX Plus to customers, Rovi Corp. announced Sept. 1. The announcement allows for the streaming integration of the widely used codec on HDTVs, gaming devices, computers and set-tops.

“Designed for easy, lightweight implementation, DivX Plus Streaming [will] help make it possible to bring a more advanced streaming experience to over-the-top services,” said Corey Ferengul, EVP of products at Rovi. “Utilizing proven technology, DivX Plus Streaming can reach a wider range of connected consumer electronics devices, help CE manufacturers drive device sales, and allow content owners and distributors to maintain security while delivering a dynamic entertainment experience.”

Rovi will include DivX Plus Streaming in its offerings to cable companies, and the codec will be included in the Rovi Entertainment Store platform (formerly named RoxioNow).

“DivX Plus Streaming is a solid addition to Rovi’s existing portfolio of white-label digital entertainment technologies and tight integration will be welcomed by CE manufacturers,” said Colin Dixon, senior partner at research firm The Diffusion Group. “The inclusion of features such as smooth fast-forward, quick stream start and subtitle support are real consumer pain points with existing streaming solutions and will help differentiate DivX Plus Streaming in the market.”

There currently are more than 500 million DivX-compatible devices in the market, Rovi reports.
