Media device manufacturer ushered in subscription streaming business with a Netflix-branded device on May 20, 2008

Six years ago on May 20, 2008, Netflix launched a branded streaming device manufactured by Roku. It marked the beginning of the by-mail disc rental pioneer’s foray into subscription streaming — a market it now dominates.

The innovation of delivering video over the Internet has shifted entertainment consumption, consumer trends and spurred new licensing revenue streams for content holders.

In honor of the anniversary and impact Roku has had on video consumption in the home, Saratoga, Calif. Mayor Emily Lo today will bestow the proclamation of “National Streaming Day” at the Roku corporate headquarters.

Roku said notable streaming milestones include 42 million households having a TV connected to the Internet, the creation of original programming, and pop culture terms such as “binging” and “spoiler alert” in the TV viewing vernacular.

“The innovations that grew out of that introduction have shaped where TV is today,” Roku founder and CEO Anthony Wood said in a statement.
