RLJ Entertainment OTT Video Properties Add 50,000 Subs

18 Sep, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

RLJ Entertainment subscription streaming video services Acorn TV and Urban Movie Channel have surpassed a combined 600,000 subscribers — up 50,000 subs from the most-recent fiscal period and up 60% compared with the previous-year period.

The Baltimore-based home entertainment distributor earlier this year increased loan commitments to AMC Networks to $23 million from $13 million. The distributor is using the funds to increase SVOD content spending in the crowding OTT video market.

Acorn originals and exclusive premieres include “Witness for the Prosecution,” “Striking Out,” “Loch Ness,” “The Heart Guy,” “Vera: Set 7,” “The Good Karma Hospital” and “Delicious.” At UMC, the return of “Fall Out Fridays” weekly original comedy programming features “The Rich and the Ruthless,” “Hard Medicine,” “Lawd Have Mercy” and “The Comedy Underground Series.”

“Our growth across digital platforms remains strong and we are focused on all elements of our strategic execution to more firmly establish Acorn TV and UMC as compelling, must-have brands in the burgeoning OTT market. We remain highly confident in achieving our objective of one million Acorn TV and UMC combined subscribers within the next 18 months,” Miguel Penella, CEO of RLJE, said in a statement.
