Report: 12% of U.S. Households View Online Video via Xbox 360, PS3

About 15 Million U.S. households watch online video content via video game consoles

Video game consoles such as the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 have become the most popular devices for consumers in the United States to watch online video content on the television, according to a new report.

Boston-based Strategy Analytics said 12% of U.S. households (15 million) use game consoles to watch online video content, which is a higher percentage than the number of people who connect their PCs to the TV. Among Xbox 360 users under the age of 25, the percentage connecting to the TV to watch online video and movies reaches 65% — supplanting the percentage who connect to the TV via a desktop or laptop. 

Ed Barton, director of digital media strategies at Strategy Analytics, said device-led digital content services are proliferating in the modern entertainment ecosystem. He said manufacturers and service providers are scrambling to optimize their strategies.

“Xbox Live content expansion addresses the desires of an increasingly demanding customer base and offers more reasons than ever to use the Microsoft box as opposed to its myriad alternatives,” Barton said, in a statement. “Competition will intensify through 2012 as rival opportunities are brought to market.”
