Ad-supported streaming site launches extreme sports genre — a first for OTT video
Popcornflix, the ad-supported streaming service from Screen Media Ventures, June 18 announced the launch of an extreme sports category — a first for OTT video.
New content features eight series, including “Wild Spirits,” which is currently broadcast on NBC Universal Sports, “Wild Spirits H2O,” “Wild Surf” and “Better Than Four,” along with fighting series “Hard Knocks” and “Ultimate Combat Experience.”
“Go Fight Live” and “Art of Fighting” provide in-depth looks into the growing MMA universe, ranging from kickboxing and jiu-jitsu to wrestling.
“It is our intention to bring a diverse range of entertainment to our users. Very few services offer quality, on-demand extreme sports completely for free,” , Popcornflix EVP David Fannon said in a statement.
Indeed, “Wild Spirits” gives viewers insight into the lives of athletes engaged in free-skiing, ice climbing and trail-running. As the name implies, “Wild Spirits H2O” offers extreme water sports action, including body boarding and extreme sailing. “Wild Surf” follows renowned surfers as they confront extreme conditions in Antarctica and ride the waves in Fiji, India and other exciting locations. “Better than Four” covers extreme cycling.
