27 Jan, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Popcornflix, the free ad-supported streaming service from Screen Media Ventures, Jan. 27 announced its app has been downloaded 10 million times.

Unlike Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video and Hulu Plus, Popcornflix and Sony’s Crackle.com are among a small group of streaming services offering free access to ad-supported content.

Popcornflix and affiliate apps FrightPix and Popcornflix Kids offer access to thousands of full-length movies (mostly ‘B’-fare) and TV programs, including Oscar winner Monster, Popeye, and mockumentary comedies such “Trailer Park Boys,” among others. TV shows include “Cheaters,” “The Big Comfy Couch,” “ReGenesis” and “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”

TV shows and movies on Popcornflix include pre-roll, spot ads and banner ads. The Popcornflix app can be download via Roku, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Android, iOS, Samsung, Windows 8, Google TV and Panasonic Smart TVs.

“Ten million app downloads is a significant accomplishment,” David Fannon, EVP at Popcornflix, said in a statement.
