New Series 'Stargate Origins' to Anchor Subscription Service

24 Jul, 2017 By: John Latchem

MGM at San Diego Comic-Con International July 20 announced plans for a new subscription-based digital platform based on the “Stargate” franchise coming this fall.

Dubbed Stargate Command, the new service would provide fans exclusive access to a variety of "Stargate" assets and content from the franchise’s nearly 25-year history.

The news coincides with the 20th anniversary of the “Stargate SG-1” TV series, which was based on the 1994 film about an alien portal that allowed human explorers to visit another world. Later spinoffs included “Stargate Atlantis” and “Stargate Universe,” plus animated series “Stargate Infinity,” resulting in a grand total of 380 episodes and two direct-to-video movies.

Anchoring the new service will be MGM’s first premium digital series, “Stargate Origins.” The 10-episode series will explore a new chapter in Catherine Langford’s early history involving her efforts to unlock the mysteries of the Stargate.

“We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure,” said Kevin Conroy, president of digital and new platforms at MGM. "We view ‘Stargate Origins’ as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years.”
