Netflix Holland Tops 1 Million Subscribers19 Aug, 2014 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Netflix has more than 1 million subscribers in Holland since launching service in the European country last September, according to a research report.
The number of Dutch subscribers to the SVOD service reached 7% in the second quarter, up from 4% in the fourth quarter, according to a consumer panel of 6,600 people conducted by Telecompaper.
Netflix hasn’t officially disclosed subscriber counts in individual countries, except the United States. It ended its most recent fiscal period with 12.9 million paid members internationally.
The research group attributed the rise to greater consumer awareness of Netflix, which topped 86% in Q2 compared to 71% in the previous-year period.
Meanwhile, the average speed across Dutch ISPs in July was 3.61 Mbps, up from 3.54 the previous month, maintaining the Netherlands as the fastest ISP country where Netflix is available.
The survey also found that Netflix subscribers stream mostly on laptops (40%), a TV connected to a laptop, Chromecast, Apple TV or game console (37%) or tablet and smart TV (31%).
Top Dutch VOD service Pathe Thuis is watched mostly on smart TVs (45%), followed by laptops (18%) or other connected TVs (15%), according to Telecompaper.
Netflix launches service in six European countries next month, including Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Austria.
