Netflix Expands Gift Cards in Europe26 Jun, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Pre-paid cards circumvent issues surrounding use and availability of credit cards in some parts of the world
In an effort to circumvent issues surrounding credit, debit and PayPal cards as it expands globally, Netflix has begun offering gift cards throughout Europe, including the United Kingdom.
In the United Kingdom the subscription streaming pioneer is offering pre-paid cards at £15, £25 or £50 amounts.
The cards are similar to gift cards offered in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In the United States, pre-paid Netflix cards valued at $30 and $60, can be purchased at Target, Walmart, Staples, Winn Dixie, Price Chopper, Stop & Shop, Lowe’s, 7-Eleven, Meijer, Best Buy, Safeway, Publix, CVS Pharmacy, Giant Eagle, Giant, Walgreens, Albertsons, Family Dollar, Kroger, GameStop, Dollar General and Food Lion.
When launching service in Latin America in 2011, Netflix encountered issues surrounding consumer acceptance using credit cards for Internet purchases.
In a promotional tag, Netflix says: “Don’t have a debit/credit card or PayPal account? As of now that’s no obstacle. Simply buy the card and start streaming.”
