NBC to Stream Record Rio Olympics Coverage

3 Aug, 2016 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Online access will be omnipresent — but still require a pay-TV subscription

Despite ongoing security, environmental and structural concerns, the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics Aug. 5-21 will be the most digital (including social media) ever.

More than 4,500 hours of NBC Olympics programming, including live and recorded, will be streamed on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports App for authenticated pay-TV subscribers via TV Everywhere platforms to desktops, mobile devices, tablets and connected TVs for the first time.

NBC Universal will present 2,084 hours of Olympic TV programming across 11 networks, including NBC, Telemundo (Spanish language), Bravo, CNBC, Golf Channel, MSNBC, NBC Sports Network, NBC Universo (Spanish), USA Network and specialty channels representing basketball and soccer.

NBC will distribute 83 hours of (delayed) 4K Ultra HD coverage available 24 hours after the initial broadcast, and will include footage from the opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, track and field, basketball, the men’s soccer final and judo, as well as Rio scenic views.

“Our digital offering for Rio marries NBC Olympics’ renowned storytelling and live-event TV coverage with today’s advanced technology to deliver more content across more platforms than ever before,” Rick Cordella, SVP and GM of digital media for NBC Sports Group, said in a statement. “Our goal is to provide ready access to every second of every event through our digital platforms.”

In addition to partnerships with Facebook and Instagram for the Games, NBC Olympics joined with Twitter, which took the unusual step of re-allocating country-specific #hashtags with emojis.

This has resulted in some awkward tweets, such as #UGA, which normally involves the University of Georgia and is now officially the country of Uganda during the Olympics.

#PUR is no longer Purdue University, but instead Puerto Rico; University of Nebraska’s Go Big Red (#GBR) is now Great Britain, and Eastern Carolina University (#ECU) is Ecuador.
