NBC Sets Streaming Records for Olympic Hockey — Despite U.S. Losses21 Feb, 2014 By: Erik Gruenwedel
NBC Sports Group Feb. 21 said a record 2.12 million authenticated viewers watched Team USA lose 1-0 to Canada in the men’s hockey semifinal at the Sochi Winter Olympics.
The tally eclipsed the previous Olympic streaming record set Feb. 20 when 1.2 million unique viewers watched Team Canada’s women hockey team come back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Team USA 3-2 in overtime.
Wednesday’s U.S.-Czech Republic men’s quarterfinal hockey game was also previously the most-streamed Olympic event ever (798,337 unique viewers).
The men’s semifinal streaming numbers also beat NBC’s non-authenticated Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5, 2012, which generated 2.105 million unique viewers.
NBCOlympics.com and the “NBC Sports Live Extra” app will continue to live-stream events with wide interest over the final weekend of the Winter Games, including Team USA’s bronze medal men’s hockey game vs. Finland on Feb. 22, the Canada-Sweden gold medal men’s hockey game, and the Winter Games Closing Ceremony on Feb. 23.
