Hulu Subs Spend More Time Streaming Than Netflix Users

6 Jul, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Hulu may be the No. 3 subscription streaming service in the United States based on total subscribers. But its users rank No. 1 in time spent streaming content on a daily basis, according to new data from comScore.

The platform co-owned by Disney, Fox, Comcast and Time Warner saw daily average use in April top 2.9 hours, compared with 2.2 hours for Netflix, 2.1 hours for YouTube and two hours for Amazon Prime Video. The average connected household now spends one hour and 40 minutes daily streaming video content, according to the comScore survey involving 12,500 households and more than 150,000 devices.

Regardless, Netflix — due to more than 50 million subs — still dominates domestic streaming with 40% of total streaming hours. YouTube, which continues to be spearheaded by user-generated short-form video, accounted for 18% of OTT viewing time, followed by Hulu (14%) and Prime Video with 7%.

Netflix subs also stream more days per month at 12.3 days. The service reports second-quarter financial results July 17.
