Hulu Gets All of 'South Park'13 Jul, 2014 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Hulu July 12 announced it has become the exclusive streaming service carrying current and catalog episodes of animated adult comedy “South Park.” Hulu, which is co-owned by The Walt Disney Co., 21st Century Fox and NBC Universal, made the announcement at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Los Angeles.
Financial terms were not disclosed. “South Park” episodes have streamed most recently on Hulu Plus since Netflix lost the rights in 2013 when its license deal with Viacom expired.
The venerable series, which is created by Matt Parker and Trey Stone and begins its 18th season Sept. 24 on Comedy Central, will be available on the Hulu Plus subscription service as well as for free on ad-supported Hulu — the latter until the premiere of the new season.
SouthPark.cc.com will continue to have all seasons until the beginning of season 18, at which point both Hulu and the website will have a revolving selection of free episodes available. Hulu will supply the backend technical, video and advertising support on SouthPark.cc.com.
“‘South Park’ has been one of the top 10 most popular shows of all time on the platform. We’re thrilled to offer the series to fans in its entirety,” Craig Erwich, head of content at Hulu, said in a statement.
Complete seasons and individual episodes of “South Park” are also available on disc and digitally at Amazon, Walmart and Target Ticket, among others.
Hulu also announced it will renew “East Los High” for a third season. “East Lost High” is the first English-language TV show with an all Latino cast and has proven popular with women 18-25. Since the series premiere in summer 2013, the teen drama has remained one of the most popular shows on Hulu.
Later this summer, Hulu will also add to its library of exclusive, current and library content. Hulu is the exclusive home for hit series such as FX’s “The Bridge,” plus NBC Universal’s Bravo Media, including the “Real Housewives” and “Top Chef” franchises.
