DirecTV Now Reaches 1 Million Subscribers

5 Dec, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

DirecTV Now, AT&T's standalone online television service, has reached 1 million subscribers — less than a year after launching.

Priced from $35 monthly, DirecTV Now features up to 120 pay-TV channels and more than 25,000 on-demand titles. Pending service upgrades include cloud-based DVR, 4K ultra-high-definition video and 35,000 VOD titles.

“To reach 1 million subscribers is an important benchmark for any OTT video service, but to go from zero to 1 million subs so quickly is quite an achievement,” Brett Sappington, senior director of research at Parks Associates, said in a statement.

DirecTV Now joins Sling TV, CBS All Access, HBO Now and Showtime OTT with more than 1 million subscribers. YouTube TV reportedly had 200,000 subs in October, with analysts projecting 2 million subs by the end of 2018.

The sub growth is important considering they buttress ongoing declines in traditional pay-TV. Dataxis reported online TV had 4.4 million combined subs at the end of the second quarter, compared with 1.1 million subs in Q1 2016. At the same time, pay-TV subs (including AT&T U-verse) industrywide fell from 100 million to 95.8 million.

“This [DirecTV Now] milestone is an incredible testament to the thousands of hours many people spent working to bring this product online and continually improve it during the past year,” David Christopher, president of AT&T Entertainment Group, said in a statement.
