DirecTV Expands NFL Streaming Service

Second-year SVOD platform now available to college students

DirecTV Aug. 10 announced it is expanding “NFLSundayTicket.tv,” a standalone subscription streaming service launched last year, to more apartments and university students unable to get the satellite TV operator.

DirecTV, which recently merged with AT&T, said the $49.99 monthly (four-month long) SVOD service featuring out-of-market games only will be made available to regional apartment, condominium or townhomes that are not now receiving satellite TV service.

In addition, currently enrolled students at four-year universities nationwide can buy “NFLSundayTicket.tv U” at a discounted ($29.99 monthly) price.

With the onslaught of over-the-top video, traditional broadcasters such as cable, satellite and telecom are rolling out online platforms aimed at capturing cord-cutters and broadband-only consumers — the latter demo estimated at more than 10 million households.

The NFL, which does not offer a proprietary SVOD service, is also in discussions with CBS regarding possible streaming access to “Thursday Night Football.”

“Millions of people in apartments and houses in the U.S. who were unable to install satellite dishes can now enjoy every out-of-market game, every Sunday afternoon on their favorite mobile and connected devices,” Alex Kaplan, SVP of marketing for DirecTV, said in a statement.

The services is available via computers, tablets, smartphones or connected devices such as Xbox One, Xbox 360, Sony PS3, Sony PS4, Roku and Chromecast.

Consumers can visit NFLSundayTicket.tv (or watch video) to see if they’re eligible for the SVOD service.
