Digital Distributor Yekra Teams With Alchemy

19 Mar, 2015 By: Thomas K. Arnold

Yekra, the much-ballyhooed film distributor that has developed a digital movie theater that can be embedded onto any website, on March 19 announced a partnership with leading independent film and television distributor Alchemy that will bring nearly 700 additional titles to its library.

Yekra has secured immediate distribution rights to more than 665 titles in the Alchemy library, including works by such acclaimed filmmakers as Richard Linklater, Werner Herzog, Lee Daniels, Gregg Araki and Dito Montiel. Also included in the deal are recent films such as Fading Gigolo, starring John Turturro, Woody Allen and Sharon Stone; Barry Levinson's The Humbling, with Al Pacino and Greta Gerwig; and What Maisie Knew, starring recent Academy Award winner Julianne Moore.

Yekra’s “direct to fan” approach has generated quite a buzz in online movie distribution circles. The company signs up affiliates to embed its movie player on their websites; these affiliates can then sell or rent digital movies or TV shows to their own audiences, giving Yekra back a percentage of the gross. The company currently has some 16,000 affiliates, including GodTube.com and GodVine.com, which together have more than 10 million unique viewers. Product ranges from small niche titles to major-studio blockbusters — thanks to a deal cut last August with Warner Bros. — such as The Dark Knight and The Great Gatsby.

The deal with Alchemy doubles the size of Yekra’s library.

“We are thrilled to expand our catalog with this impressive collection of entertaining and innovative films,” said Yekra CEO Lee Waterworth. “We have a shared vision with [Alchemy CEO] Bill Lee and his talented team at Alchemy, and that is to unite storytellers and audiences into one dynamic community. With this distribution partnership in place, we know we can accomplish just that.”

“As a company, we made a promise to our filmmakers to explore the best ways to bring their stories to engaged audiences,” Lee added. “Through this robust partnership with Yekra, we are able to leverage yet another unique and global distribution platform for our library from a company that has a mission well aligned with ours, and we look forward to growing our relationship with Lee and his team.”
