Apple reportedly has signed Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon to star and produce in two seasons of an untitled series about morning news and the people who make it happen.

First reported by Deadline.com, the original series marks one of Apple's first forays into scripted programming. Apple is also rebooting “Amazing Stories,” with Steven Spielberg and Bryan Fuller reimagining the original 1985-87 fantasy sci-fi anthology.

Apple earlier this year said it would spend $1 billion on original programming. The high-profile signings represent a significant ramp up from the tech giant’s initial original content attempts, “Planet of the Apps” and “Carpool Karaoke.”

Then again, Apple is doubling down on Apple TV, offering 4K UHD movies, in an attempt to jumpstart sales of the streaming media set-top.

Apple recently reported fourth-quarter (ended Sept. 30) “other product” sales of $3.2 billion, up 39% from revenue of $2.4 billion a year ago.

The “other product” category includes Apple TV, Apple Watch, Beats headphones, iPod Touch and Apple-branded and third-party accessories.
