Amazon Prime Video March 17 announced an extension of a subscription streaming licensing deal with A24, producer of Oscar-winning Moonlight and co-producer with Amazon Studios of Oscar-winning Manchester by the Sea.
Under the new agreement, Amazon Prime Video, beginning May 21, will be the exclusive SVOD service for Moonlight, which won Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) statues at the 89th Academy Awards in February.
Moonlight, about a young gay black man's struggles in a crime-ridden Miami neighborhood, was released Feb. 28 into retail channels, including packaged media and digitally via Amazon Video and other platforms.
Future A24 movies coming to Prime Video include Academy Award nominated 20th Century Women, starring Annette Bening (American Beauty) and Elle Fanning (Amazon Studios’ The Neon Demon); American Honey starring Sasha Lane (Hunting Lila) and Shia LaBeouf (Transformers); Free Fire starring Brie Larson (Room), Cillian Murphy (Inception) and Armie Hammer (Nocturnal Animals); The Lovers starring Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment) and Tracy Letts (Imperium); and It Comes at Night, starring Joel Edgerton (Love) and Riley Keough ("The Girlfriend Experience"). Finally, A Ghost Story, starring Oscar winner Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), will also land on Prime Video.
“We already have an incredible catalog of films … and we are happy to extend our relationship,” Jason Ropell, VP and worldwide head of motion pictures for Amazon Studios, said in a statement.
Current A24 movies available on Amazon via disc, EST and Prime Video include Room, featuring Brie Larson’s Best Actress performance; Amy, Oscar winner for Best Documentary depicting the life and death of singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse; supernatural horror film The Witch; Ex Machina, starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl); and Dark Places, starring Oscar winner Charlize Theron (Monster) and Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass).
