Akamai Bows Bit Rate Streaming for iPhone and iPod

6 Jul, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Akamai Technologies has debuted variable bit rate streaming technology for video content earmarked for Apple iPhone and iPod devices.

The variable bit rate streaming allows users to receive video more quickly and with reduced buffering — both key elements to portable media devices.

Content owners such as the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., Discovery, Fox News, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, MTV, NPR, Turner Sports and USA Today are participating in the showcase site.

Inlet Technologies’ Armada and Spinnaker solutions are being used to encode the VOD and live experiences on the showcase site.

The software, which can be demonstrated at www.iphone.akamai.com, is included in the iPhone 3G S smart phones, which launched last month.

“Apple’s extensive support for … streaming of live and on-demand video to the iPhone and iPod touch has transformed the quality of video content that consumers can now view while mobile,” said Tim Napoleon, chief strategist digital media at Akamai.
