A dying research doctor, his questionable experiments and the doctor’s return to a small town provide the makings of this mysterious thriller.
Ana Puttnam and her father, Dr. Puttnam, have returned to her mother’s hometown of Rosales. It was here that many years ago the doctor set up a successful cancer clinic, where he and his wife, Magdalena, worked on cancer research, resulting in the advancement of both cancer treatment and Puttnam’s career.
Ana is hoping to convert their old family mansion into a museum in her father’s memory and restore his reputation, which has come into question because of his research methods in Rosales decades earlier. Despite the townspeople’s disapproval of the Puttnam’s return, Ana is sure she can bring money to the town.
But soon inanimate objects in the mansion start moving on their own, and Ana feels a force within the home pushing her out.
The mystery about who is condemned, as the title states, remains unanswered until the end. (Is it Ana, Dr. Puttnam, the townspeople?) But much of the film is left so vague throughout that you don’t care enough by the end to really learn what is going on. The big reveal has more to do with who Ana really is than with any sort of spooky spirits that may be haunting the Puttnam house.
The bonus materials feature deleted scenes that were too brief to add anything of interest, a making-of featurette that was mostly just behind-the-scenes footage with no interviews or voiceovers to explain anything, and a featurette that shows the shooting of a scene involving a stuntman walking into a building on fire.
