Sony Corp.’s nascent digital video-on-demand (VOD) movie service, dubbed “Qriocity,” is launching in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, offering cloud-based VOD available on Sony devices such as the PlayStation 3, portable media players, HDTVs, Blu-ray players and other Internet-enabled products.
Speaking Sept. 1 at the IFA confab in Berlin, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said “Qriocity,” which will offer music downloads this fall, is being imbedded in select Bravia HDTV units, Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems.
The platform will include content from all the major studios, including Lionsgate, NBC Universal and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
In Sony’s 2009 annual report, Sony said “Qriocity” would be based on the PlayStation Network and would also offer music downloads via PlayStation 3, VAIO computers and related media devices.
