Just in time for the Blu-ray Disc release of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (Aug. 5), Casper Van Dien picked up a PlayStation 3 for the family.

But his wife and five kids may get in the way of him watching himself reprise the role of Johnny Rico in 1080p. At least right away.

“I don't know when I'll get to see it,” the 39-year-old actor said. “… We have a lot of Disney movies we still have to get through. I think we have every one now.”

Back for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's third installment of the popular, futuristic franchise, Van Dien said it “felt like [he] never left.”

“It was awesome to revisit it,” Van Dien said. “For the past four years [director Ed Neumeier] has been sending me Starship Troopers 3 script pages,” he said. “He wanted to bring back the humor to it.”

For the DVD and Blu-ray releases, Van Dien said he especially enjoyed doing the interviews and commentaries for the bonus features. “There was always a high-def camera following us around,” he said. “We had a lot of point-of-view going on during the filming.

“[Sony] really put a lot into this and it was only meant to be DVD at first. … Sony went above and beyond the call of duty for the Blu-ray. The cool factor was just too huge.”

Asked if there was someone who he worked with on Marauder that especially stood out, Van Dien singled out visual effects supervisor Robert Skotak.

“He was extremely hands on, and very enthusiastic,” he said. “He's an Academy Award winner (Terminator 2: Judgment Day; Aliens) and he's a miracle worker. … It was surreal to work with him.”

As for getting to watch Marauder on Blu-ray at home, Van Dien said he'll get to it.

“I have a huge DVD collection,” he said. “I'm a movie geek, and I pick up DVDs all the time. Now I have to replace them with Blu-rays.”
