Although The Square is a bit formulaic in its noirish plot, its blue-collar Australian setting adds something new.
Ray and Carla are married neighbors meeting in parking lots to consummate their affair. Carla, who’s married to small-time thug Greg, decides the only way she and Ray can get away and be together is to take a bag of money she finds from a crime committed by her husband.
Of course, to make that money somehow disappear, the couple needs a plan. Hiring another goon, Billy, to torch the house (thereby supposedly losing the money) seems like a good option — until the operation gets botched when someone is still in the house as it is set on fire.
What ensues is a series of blackmailings and tense interactions between contractor Ray, Greg, Billy and their wives. What could have been a more-interesting dissection of marriage and relationships (a key event involving Billy’s meek wife sets the events into effect) instead is more of standard thriller, albeit one that keeps the screws tightened by the nature of its characters attempting to go about their daily lives as married suburban couples while a dangerous sequence of events happens below the surface.
