Sony Readies ‘This Is It’ For DVD and Blu-ray Disc30 Nov, 2009 By: Chris Tribbey
This Is It, the hit concert film detailing Michael Jackson’s preparation for his sold-out concert series, is getting a Jan. 26 DVD and Blu-ray Disc release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
“It’s the biggest music movie ever, in terms of the box office,” said Marc Rashba, VP of worldwide marketing for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. “Clearly, for both music and movie fans, it’s something you almost have to own.”
Taking in nearly $240 million worldwide, the film featured the King of Pop’s final rehearsals before his June 25 death. Sony goes even further with the home entertainment offerings, with more than 60 minutes of never-before-seen bonuses for the DVD, 90 minutes for the Blu-ray, including two documentaries, “Staging the Return: Beyond the Show” and “Staging the Return: The Adventure Begins;” a costume featurette called “The Gloved One”; a cast and crew tribute dubbed “Memories of Michael”; and “Auditions: Searching for the World’s Best Dancers”.
For the Blu-ray, Sony is also including a “Making of ‘Smooth Criminal’” featurette, as well as uncut, all-new vignettes of “Smooth Criminal” and “Thriller,” which are seen briefly in the film itself. The Blu-ray is also outfitted with Sony’s BD Live movieIQ feature that can create a This Is It playlist and offer trivia and cast and crew background.
“We’re trying to make the proposition for the Blu-ray even greater,” Rashba said.
The Blu-ray retails at $39.95 (DVD $28.96). Sony will also release a UMD version for the PlayStation Portable at $24.94.
