Director and Actors Design Bow Ties for 'Love Is Strange'

14 Jan, 2015 By: Angelique Flores

Stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as well as writer-director Ira Sachs have partnered with Tie The Knot to design their own bow ties inspired by the film Love Is Strange.

Tie The Knot is releasing the neckwear to raise funds for organizations that support the marriage equality movement.

In Love Is Strange, Ben (Lithgow) and George (Molina) tie the knot after nearly 40 years together. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released the film on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD Jan. 13.

The three limited-edition, one-of-a-kind bow ties will retail for $25 each and are available exclusively at The Tie Bar (www.thetiebar.com/jtf). Proceeds from the sale of the bow ties will go to various organizations that fight for the civil rights of gays and lesbians, as well as to fund Tie The Knot’s international public education campaign that advocates same-sex marriage.

Inspired by his character Ben and his love for art, The John Lithgow tie features bold, abstract combinations of colors similar to the styles of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.

The Alfred Molina is inspired by his character George, a music teacher, and features Frédéric Chopin, whose music scores the film, in the pop art style of an Andy Warhol piece.

The Sachs-Torres tie is inspired by the iconic gay bar Julius in New York City’s West Village, in which a poignant scene from the movie takes place. It features interlocking, stylized “J”s, expressing a collaboration between Sachs and his husband, Boris Torres.

Love Is Strange is a film about the family we choose as gay people,” Sachs said. “And our bowtie honors the importance of a meeting place like Julius to the building of community.”

Torres added, "For Ira and I, it was also where we fell in love, so it seems particularly fitting as a metaphor for our relationship, and marriage."
