These days, making a zombie film is almost guaranteed to produce a surefire hit. From 28 Days Later and Quarantine to comedies Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead and even Zombie Strippers with erstwhile porn star Jenna Jameson, the prerequisites for celluloid prowess depicting ravenous flesh-eating humans are simple: spurting, gushing blood and guts everywhere.
Low-budget British farce Zombie Women of Satan, which features a bevy of largely (literally) topless women in varying stages of blood loss (hence the tactless tagline “It Really Was the Wrong Time of the Month!”) slips and slides on its entrails with subjective degrees of success.
Busty Skye Brannigan (Victoria Hopkins, who resembles Noomi Rapace from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), hooks up with a motley crew that includes Pervo the Clown (co-director Warren Speed), a flatulent dwarf, a mute chainsaw juggler, a burlesque singer and a carnival barker to rescue her sister (Victoria Broom) from a farm inhabited by infected, scantily clad vixens controlled by a mad scientist and his dysfunctional family.
With that uncomplicated premise and a steady barrage of British toilet-humor (that largely misses), the viewer is left to anticipate and appreciate the gore. And despite a miniscule FX budget, Satan doesn’t disappoint with visually effective point-blank shotgun blasts to the head, splitting skulls, gauged eyeballs, vomit streams and spurting neck wounds, among other hemorrhaging orifices.
