Samsung Launches HDTV App Challenge

14 Sep, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

Samsung is launching a second “Free the TV” challenge for application developers, with a top prize of $100,000, a 65-inch LED D8000 HDTV and a 32 GB Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Developers will compete in three categories (Controller Apps, Companion Apps and Interactive Apps) with an emphasis on applications that can work across multiple screens. The 2010 winner, WeDraw, allows users to draw on a handheld device and have that drawing appear in real time on an HDTV.

“Samsung Apps has become the most popular TV apps platform in the industry, with more than 900 apps available worldwide and nearly 10 million downloads to date,” said Eric Anderson, VP of content for Samsung Electronics America. “In addition, our Galaxy mobile phones and tablets have also been incredibly well received. The time is right to bring these devices together with Converged Apps.”

Winners will be announced at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, with a second place prize of $75,000, a 55-inch HDTV and Galaxy Tab, and a third-place prize of $50,000, a 55-inch HDTV and Galaxy Tab.
