Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains (DVD Review)

Young-Diane-Lane-in-tights fans, rejoice. Sept. 16 Rhino releases on DVD 1981’s Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains.
The film follows three small-town misfit girls, filled with spirit if not actual talent, who start a punk band called The Stains, led by Lane as lead singer Corinne Burns.
The film will appeal mostly to fans of Lane, her co-star Laura Dern and fans of early late ’70s/early ’80s girl punk bands such as The Runaways and The Slits.
The acting is strong, and the film is full of enough quirky charm and genuine feeling that its easy to see why it has its cult following. And The Stains’ primal music is pretty good, if you like that sort of thing.
Music fans also will enjoy appearances by Steve Jones, Paul Cook (both of The Sex Pistols), Paul Simonon (The Clash) and Fee Waybill (The Tubes).
