Comprehensive reviews of upcoming movies, TV shows and other programs released on standard DVD.

Wyatt Earp (American Experience) (DVD Review)

March 29, 2010

At 60 minutes, it’s short for an “American Experience,” but a lot is packed in. You can’t make this kind of stuff up, even though a lot of Hollywood movies based on the Old West lawman concocted material that wasn’t this interesting.

Baseball: A Film By Ken Burns (DVD Review)

March 28, 2010

This is not just a wonderful sports DVD, rich in memory and detail, but also one of the all-time great documentaries.

Robin Hood: The Truth Behind Hollywood’s Most Filmed Legend (DVD Review)

March 27, 2010

An earnest exploration of the origins of the Robin Hood legend, this documentary offers some enlightening insights that most viewers probably weren’t familiar with beyond portrayals in Hollywood movies. (Prebook 3/31/10; Street Date 4/27/10)

Housebroken (DVD Review)

March 24, 2010

The best bits come with the interplay between Katey Sagal, who still looks fantastic and shows the same comedic chops she did in “Married … With Children,” and Danny DeVito, who parlays his grouchy persona from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” into 'Housebroken’s' tough-love father. (Street Date 3/30/10)

Bob the Builder: Heavy Duty Diggers (DVD Review)

March 23, 2010

Learn how to face your fears and embrace your talents in this empowering collection of “Bob the Builder” episodes. (Street Date 3/23/10)

T.A.M.I. Show: Collector’s Edition, The (DVD Review)

March 22, 2010

Serving up two hours of sheer exuberance, The T.A.M.I. Show is among my favorite movies ever. It captures so many performers at their peak and certainly in their youth. (Street Date 3/23/10)

Bigger Than Life (DVD Review)

March 22, 2010

The first movie I know to deal with a prescription drug nightmare in the suburbs. (Street Date 3/23/10)

Five Minutes of Heaven (DVD Review)

March 21, 2010

'Five Minutes of Heaven,' helmed by German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Oscar nominated Downfall), takes real-life events and cleverly juxtaposes the emotional fallout its victims endured. (Prebook 3/22/10; Street Date 4/27/10)

Red Cliff (DVD Review)

March 20, 2010

War is ugly, but not in a John Woo film. Everything is gorgeous, from the scenery to the costumes and even the battles. (Street Date 3/23/10)

Super Bowl XLIV Champions: New Orleans Saints (DVD Review)

March 19, 2010

These overviews are generally as interesting as the season was. Novelist Anne Rice even appears early on.
