Virgin Media Store Includes DVD With Digital Movie Purchase

26 Sep, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

British pay-TV operator Virgin Media now includes a DVD copy with the purchase of a digital movie — including Warner Home Video’s just-released Wonder Woman.

Content selections include HBO’s Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season, Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, HBO's Westworld: Season One, DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, 20th Century Fox’s Alien: Covenant and Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, according to Cue Entertainment.

Notably, the digital store does not require a pay-TV subscription, but non-subs must register on the Virgin Media website and have a compatible connected device such as desktop computer, iOS and Android laptop, tablet and mobile phone. DVDs are shipped (when available) to the registered address — and only for movies.

The program mirrors Sky’s “Buy & Keep” platform that launched in 2014, and earned 2017 British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) Digital Retailer Initiative of the Year, as well as Digital Retailer of the Year.

Virgin Media would like to emulate Sky’s digital retail success, which included more than 3 million consumers in 2016, making it the largest digital movie retailer for new-releases in the U.K., according to Sky.

Virgin Media Store reportedly matches Sky on price for new releases  £13.99 ($18.81) and catalog £7.99 ($10.74).
