Target Bows Free Shipping on All Online Orders Above $5023 Jun, 2014 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Amount is low enough to affect video games, consoles and movie discs
Target June 23 announced it is offering free shipping for all online purchases above $50 — a move the national retailer hopes will keep it competitive with Walmart.com and Amazon, among others. Free shipping includes delivery in 3-5 business days.
Previously, Target.com only offered free shipping on select purchases, which led to confusion at checkout when consumers realized not all items in their cart qualified for free shipping. The new policy does not apply to select heavy or oversize items.
The new policy should be a boon to entertainment and gaming since online purchases of Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Blu-ray Disc players, movie and game discs now ship for free.
Competitors Walmart.com and Amazon also offer free shipping, with the former including it on orders above $50 — but with a 6-9-day delivery window. Amazon offers free shipping on select purchases above $35, while including free two-day shipping on most purchases for Prime members.
“We’ve heard from guests they don’t fully understand our shipping policy — so we’ve changed it to make it simpler and reduce the friction in making purchases on the site,” Jason Goldberger, SVP of Target.com and mobile, said in a statement.
Minneapolis-based Target operates 1,916 stores, including 1,789 in the U.S. and 127 in Canada, in addition to online.
