Report: Gaming, Electronics Sales Online Grew During Holidays

Video games (No. 1), consumer electronics (No. 3) and computer hardware (No. 5) were among the top five products to improve in 2013 over 2012, in terms of sales performance during the holiday season, according to online tracking service comScore.

Overall online spending for the holidays was $42.8 billion, a 10% increase year over year. The holiday season saw 10 days where online spending was more than $1 billion, with Cyber Monday (Dec. 2) No. 1 at $1.73 billion.

“Our expectations for the online holiday shopping season anticipated that consumers would spend heavily later into the season out of necessity to make up for the highly compressed holiday shopping calendar this year,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “Unfortunately that was not in the cards, as the final online shopping week saw considerably softer sales than anticipated, including zero billion dollar spending days — although Monday and Tuesday came close.”
