Family Video Shipping 1 Million DVDs to Troops

10 Nov, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Family Video, the Glenview, Ill.-based independent video store rental chain with more than 700 stores, has implemented a consumer program designed to ship 1 million movie DVDs to troops stationed overseas during the winter holidays.

Called “Operation: Entertain the Troops,” the program allows consumers to purchase for $2 a movie DVD, donate $2 and have a store staffer select a title, or bring in a DVD of their own.

Customers are encouraged to fill out a personal note accompanying their DVD selection.

Movies are delivered to local military bases, which arrange transport overseas to Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard personnel.

“A great many of our troops and their families have been renting movies from Family Video for years,” Keith Hoogland, Family Video owner and president, said in a statement. “We want to maintain that relationship by duplicating the Family Video experience for them. This is our sincere ‘thank you’ for their dedication to our country’s safety and freedoms.”
