EMA Awards Two Scholarships5 Jun, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey
The Entertainment Merchants Association has awarded two scholarships, each worth $1,500 a year for up to four years.
The recipients are Haadjer Benmerzouga, a pharmacy technician for Giant Eagle who has been accepted into Northeast Ohio Medical University to study pharmacy science, and Emily Sargent, who will be attending Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind., to study American Sign Language. Sargent’s mother works for Baker & Taylor.
“We were impressed by the high level of academic achievement of both Haadjer and Emily and the passion each of them brings to their studies and their career choices,” said Mark Fisher, president and CEO of EMA. “It is a privilege to be able to assist them in their education.”
EMA has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to more than 230 students since 1987. The scholarships are awarded to employees, and children and spouses of employees of EMA members.
“Last year, my father was diagnosed with kidney failure, endured dialysis and finally received a kidney transplant,” Sargent said. “Those unexpected experiences and mounting medical bills took my plans for college and made them no longer a certainty. With this scholarship, you have given back my ability to become a Sign Language Interpreter and speak for those people who cannot speak for themselves.”
