eBay Launches Packaged-Media Store in the U.K.

11 Sep, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

E-commerce giant eBay has bowed a sales platform in the United Kingdom focusing on packaged media, including DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Dubbed “The Entertainment Store,” the platform also offers consumer access to new and used video games, music CDs, vinyl albums, books and comics.

The site is currently promoting The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Tenth Season on DVD and Blu-ray, which releases at retail Sept. 12 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

“We want to be the destination for physical media in the U.K., driven by best value, unrivalled inventory and competitive seller fees. The first item ever sold on eBay U.K. was a Scorpions CD in 1999 and now we are home to some of the world’s largest suppliers of books, music, film and games,” Rob Hattrell, VP of eBay U.K. said in a statement.

Notably, packaged media has become significant revenue generator for eBay U.K. The site claims more than 830 million searches for physical media this year — up 3% from last year. The U.K. platform reportedly sells 13 DVD/Blu-ray discs every 60 seconds.

"It is still a massive market," Murray Lambell, eBay U.K. trading VP, told Cue Entertainment

Indeed, U.K. physical sales of music, TV shows, movies, video games and books topped £3.8 billion ($5 billion) in 2016.

“The launch of The Entertainment Shop is a natural progression for eBay that will offer brands and sellers of all sizes the opportunity to capitalize on the U.K.’s enduring appetite for physical media,” Hattrell said.

An eBay rep wasn’t immediately available to address whether The Entertainment Shop would launch domestically.

San Jose, Calif.-based eBay reported net income of $493 million on sales of $2.3 billion during the most-recent fiscal period.
