Chernin, McCarthy Join Pandora Board9 Feb, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Former News Corp. president Peter Chernin and Barry McCarthy, ex-CFO with Netflix, have been elected to the board of Internet-based radio service Pandora.
The additions raise speculation that Pandora — which, like Netflix streaming, is included in myriad third-party media players — may be preparing to go public.
Chernin was a big supporter of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and instrumental in developing Fox's digital properties and (now questionable) acquisition of MySpace, among other initiatives.
McCarthy was Netflix's original CFO and helped guide the online DVD rental pioneer to become a media powerhouse.
“Peter brings an extraordinary track record of leadership at some of the world’s most successful global media companies,” said Tim Westergren, Pandora founder and chief strategy officer, in a statement. “His diverse talent and deep experience will be invaluable as we seek to accelerate our growth. Additionally, Barry’s decade-plus tenure as chief financial officer at a truly great consumer services company (Netflix) will be a tremendous resource for us.”
