Best Buy Co. will fire a shot across the bow of home entertainment when it offers the Internet-connected Toshiba Smart Blu-ray Disc player for $39.99 — $40 off the suggested retail price — on Nov. 25, the annual post-Thanksgiving Black Friday retail holiday.The Toshiba player includes apps from CinemaNow (transactional video-on-demand), Netflix and Pandora.
Notably, the BD player price matches the $39.99 price Walmart offered a DVD player for on Black Friday in 2003 — a price that helped transition the home entertainment industry from VHS among mainstream consumers.
Minneapolis-based Best Buy, which is opening doors at stores at midnight, is also offering Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 on Blu-ray/DVD combo for $9.99 — two weeks after its Nov. 11 retail launch, according the retailer’s Black Friday circular posted on www.Black-Friday.net. The retailer’s website will be open for business on Thanksgiving.
World’s largest retailer Walmart will sell an LG BD player for $49 and Internet-connected Sony BD player for $79. It is selling the LG Class Cinema 47-inch 3DTV with 3D Blu-ray player and glasses for $799; and a Vizio 42-inch 3DTV with four pairs of 3D glasses for $598.
Meanwhile, Walmart unit Sam’s Club will sell Rio, Rango, Cars 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon BD/DVD/Digital Copy, among others, for $9.98 each.
