Anticipation surrounding the release of cult vampire film Twilight on DVD and Blu-ray DVD received another boost March 18 when Wal-Mart said the Summit Home Entertainment title was the most pre-ordered DVD in its history.

Widely expected to be the year’s biggest DVD release based on the title’s $190 million box office take as well as its dedicated following, Twilight dethrones pre-orders from previous top-selling Wal-Mart DVDs, including The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Spider-Man and releases from Garth Brooks, Keith Urban and Nickleback.

Wal-Mart did not disclose the number of actual pre-sale orders.

Twilight streets March 21, with retailers Hastings Entertainment and Blockbuster hosting blood drives beginning March 18, in addition to them and other retailers holding pre-sale midnight events March 20 and proprietary special-edition releases.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based retail behemoth said it would offer its exclusive special edition single-disc DVD at 12:01 am.

Wal-Mart’s 24-hour stores nationwide will host more than 2,400 midnight parties March 20 for the midnight DVD release.

The retailer said an exclusive pre-taped message from the Twilight cast on the set of sequel New Moon will be shown at the 24-hour stores.

“We know this is unlike any other DVD release in our history, and we want to deliver a memorable event and store experience for teens and adult fans everywhere,” says Greg Hall, VP of merchandising for Wal-Mart Entertainment.
