Twilight Dawns at No. 1 on Sales Chart25 Mar, 2009 By: Thomas K. Arnold
It took Summit Entertainment’s Twilight exactly one day to sell enough DVDs and Blu-ray Discs to top the national home video sales chart for the week ended March 22.
The film, a runaway theatrical hit with high appeal among young girls, sold more than 3 million discs its first day in stores, a Saturday, Summit reports.
That was enough to send it straight to No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week, where it outsold second-ranked Pinocchio, from Walt Disney Studios, by a margin of nearly 10 to 1. Pinocchio had debuted at No. 1 the previous week.
Twilight also was the top Blu-ray Disc seller for the week.
In rental stores, however, the film took a backseat to Universal Studios’ Role Models, which clung to the No. 1 spot on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the second consecutive week with just a minor 17% drop in rental activity. Twilight debuted at No. 2.
Two other new releases fared surprisingly well on the sales chart. Universal Studios’ Barbie Thumbelina, the latest direct-to-video installment in the successful doll-based movie franchise, debuted at No. 4 on First Alert, right behind Role Models.
Lionsgate’s Punisher: War Zone, a box office underachiever, debuted at No. 5 on the sales chart. But with 19% of its sales coming from Blu-ray Disc, the film bowed at a strong No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, almost overtaking Pinocchio, which slipped to No. 2 after debuting at No. 1 the previous week.
Punisher also had strong rental appeal, bowing at No. 4 on the rental chart.
