Summit Turns Charts ‘Red’

The action comedy Red, from Summit Entertainment, beat Walt Disney’s Secretariat for the top spot on the national home video charts for the week ended Jan. 30, proving that the supplier, known for its “Twilight” franchise, is no one-trick pony.

Red, which earned $90.4 million in theaters, debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart as well as the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, while Secretariat, which earned $59.6 million on the big screen, bowed at No. 2 on both charts. According to Nielsen data Secretariat sold 62% as many units as Red, although Nielsen numbers do not include Walmart or Sam’s Club, where family films such as Secretariat traditionally overperform relative to their box office.

A third theatrical feature newly released on disc, Lionsgate’s Saw: The Final Chapter, debuted at No. 3 on both charts, although the film only sold 18% as many units as Red.

Sony Pictures’ Takers, the previous week’s top-selling disc, slipped to No. 8.

Red also captured the top spot on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart its first week in stores, while Sony Pictures’ The Social Network finished at No. 2 for the second consecutive week. Saw debuted at No. 3 on the rental chart, while Secretariat bowed at No. 6. Takers finished the week at No. 4.

Neither Summit nor Disney holds back its new releases from Netflix or Redbox, so they are available for rent the same day they go on sale.
