Projections: Tyler Perry Should Take No. 1

6 Sep, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

Two significant theatrical movies were released on disc Aug. 31, but the street day was mostly dominated by TV DVD box sets.

From Lionsgate came Tyler Perry’s comedy Why Did I Get Married Too?, starring Janet Jackson. It fared better than the original, earning $60 million in theaters. From Fox came the comedy Marmaduke ($33.6 million), based on the much-loved comic strip and starring Owen Wilson as the voice of the dog of the title. Why Did I Get Married Too? should fare well in both the rental and sellthrough markets, landing at No. 1 on both national charts.

Meanwhile, on the TV DVD front, Universal came out with the sixth season of the medical drama “House,” Fox released the second season of “Sons of Anarchy,” and Warner came out with the first season of “The Vampire Diaries.” Of the group, “House” should perform best in sales, landing at No. 3 for the week ended Sept. 5.
