Projections: Three Contenders Vie for Top Sales Spot

13 Dec, 2010 By: John Latchem

Three strong contenders emerged from the Dec. 7 new-release week for the top sales spot.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, from Summit, was the top-selling title the previous week despite being on shelves just two days and should perform well its first full week in stores. Previous “Twilight” movies have managed to carry that momentum into a second-week victory, but they have not faced competition as strong as the third installment has.

The most likely candidate to challenge Eclipse is Shrek Forever After. The “Shrek” franchise is a durable name in animation, the last few family films that were box-office hits have performed well on disc, and collectors will want to pick up the final installment of the series to round out their sets. The biggest question facing Shrek Forever After is how many people will get it as part of the new four-movie boxed set, which will not count toward its sales total.

However, don’t be surprised if Warner’s Inception, with a huge retail push, lands in the top spot.
